Ha, thanks, Tom. No, it was in the University of Maine Rec center in Orono. Something tells me the Williamsburg bathhouse wouldn’t have been quite so muted…
Sauna, Huberman Lab... you're speaking my language. My initial reaction was to think how lucky I am to have built my own sauna, that my wife & I enjoy together, & how different that experience is in comparison to group dynamics.
Then I linger on "ass sweat" for a moment & then my mind slips to the internal suffering of 200 degrees, the sensation of the singing of my nose hairs, and the difficulty in drawing each breath.
I conclude that we all may go into a saunas in different places, groups, or dynamics but as time passes, we all find the same place, discomfort.
Ha, well said. It wasn't the discomfort I expected when I went in but I'd like to think some good came out of it...
You built your own sauna! Very nice. Next you'll have to install a cold bath. I did my first ice bath last summer in Wales at Russel Brand's Community festival. The water was 0.1 degrees Celsius. A different type of discomfort...
Cold plunge is a different kind of challenge to maintain unfortunately. I haven't figured out the logistics of an inexpensive way to do it outside of early spring & late fall. Tried to get my local pool to purchase one. Figured it would draw some much needed patrons to the pool, and had the rest of my fellow board members mostly swayed to my idea, but unfortunately the red tape of having a public cold plunge outweighed public health.
For sure. Not as easy to find or install as a sauna. You should keep pressing the idea at your pool with the board members. Send them a link to that Huberman lab podcast and some Wim Hof iceman vids (he was at that event, actually). If all else fails, you can intersperse your sauna time with snow angels...
I’ve been thinking about trying to get into a rhythm of saunas. Just haven’t gotten there yet.
Great story. I too often find myself with something humorous that comes out that isn’t always thought through 😂
Ha, thanks Brian. I hear you. Then again, without those gaffes we'd lose a rich vein of writing material to mine
So great! Please tell me this happened at the Bathhouse in Greenpoint!
