I loved this post, especially because I tried to read Finnegan's Wake in high school and failed miserably. Perhaps I should try Ulysses now that I am an old crone.
Constantine, I am working my way through Homer at the moment with the intent of tackling Ulysses this fall. I did grab a copy of Gilbert's book based upon your previous recommendation so I will definitely be using that. I look forward to sharing my experience with you.
I thought of recommending The Odyssey too as well as Gilbert but Ulysses is enough of a whopper. But for a disciplined, hardcore reader like yourself, the winedark sea is the ideal prep. I await your reviews...
There isn’t enough adderall in the world. I always think I’m smart until I try to read a book over 100 pages.
That's why Harry Potter's great, because it sucked in kids until they were reading mammoth length.
I did love Harry Potter as a kid… the only thing that kept my attention.

Ha, so you can relate! And of course I think it's fair to say that EVERYONE who tried to read Finnegan's Wake failed miserably
That makes me feel better. There were so many smart guys in my accelerated English class.
*smart asses
This is a really great right jab of a post.
Thanks for the punchy comment!

I fear I may be the extra type, for I'm the kind of reader who found Clive Barker's 'Imajica' to be genius.
Ha, hard not to write in praise of Joyce without sounding like a snot. Never read Clive Barker so good to know where to start if I ever want to
I may not be a ‘snob’, but admit I have long had a list of books I’ve always intended reading/listening to in order to become one.
