I'm enjoying this series. Relatable. So many great lines but this one stood out, "The idea was to put on a show that you were unhinged and a danger to others. One of the conscripts threw a rock through the window of the psychologist’s office and another pulled a pocketknife on her. They were both awarded deferment for their criminal efforts while those who behaved well were punished with two-year terms."

Thanks, Thales. I take it you were there too?

Yes, it was definitely more of a Marx Brothers experience than a Full Metal Jacket one…

My experience was culture shock. Here, I'm imagining you as Hawkeye in M*A*S*H.

I clearly need to see a few episodes of M*A*S*H. I've only ever seen a few clips from it.

Just found this: "Based on the 1970 movie, itself based on a novel, MASH was designed as a “black comedy” set during the Korean War. It was really a thinly veiled critique of the war in Vietnam raging at the time. The creators of the show knew they wouldn't get away with making a Vietnam war comedy."

Watch the feature movie, and then work towards the series. I watched much of it 30 years ago, and have the first season scheduled for next year. I want to make 2025 a year of classics.

There’s a new documentary, ‘M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television’, from the director of ‘The U.S. vs. John Lennon’ and ‘Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?)’.

I agree with Thales’ comment. I am stuck on the fact that bad behavior was rewarded with freedom. It’s amazing that more conscripts didn’t rebel. Perhaps a sign of how strong family pressure and national pride are in Cyprus!

This sounds like a script for a film or TV series along the lines of M.A.S.H. I particularly liked the ponytailed conscripts yelling for porno during the indoctrination video. Perhaps you should turn this episode from your life into a humorous novella. I'd buy it. 🪖

I appreciate that, Grimalkin. It was high drama (comedy) indeed. Never a dull moment there. I guess the video of helicopters firing and all those explosions was a porno of sorts for the army people who composed it...
